On October 11, 2024 one of the biggest art festivals took place in Newark NJ. Ayana Morris, who is a successful filmmaker had her “Don’t Touch My Hair” artwork on display at Harriet Tubman Square. This exhibit was created to challenge societal norms surrounding Black hair.
Mayor Ras J Baraka, Congresswoman LaMonica Mclver, and Rutgers University- Newark Chancellor Jeffrey Robinson were all in attendance. Ayana Morris main mission was to let all black people know that’s it’s ok to embrace your natural beauty. She believes that all of us are naturally beautiful in our own way, so reclaiming our Black Identity through art is a must.
Once everyone got the opportunity to enter inside the “Don’t Touch My Hair” exhibit, they were able to see moving images of Black Women’s Hair. A powerful poem was on display helping the audience grasp the trails and tribulations black women go through with their hair. To give you an example, one of the images on display showed a woman with blow-dried straight hair, while another showed how hair was braided into maps, guiding the path to freedom for slaves. This exhibit also had an installed service salon with products from Mielle’s company.
Throughout that weekend, many people got the chance to enjoy a series of events. There was a panel for people to learn about black hair and ask questions. On Oct 12th conversations with Allure’s Jessica Cruel, Shauna Kay, Barri Gibson, Amanda Mitchell, Kela Walker, and Jennifer Edwards took place, which covered Black Women’s Portrayal In Print Media, Black In Beauty, as well as people using social media to enhance their businesses. On October 13th, The Grit & Glam Brunch honored Mikki Taylor, Misa Hylton, and Claire Sulmners for their contributions to Black beauty and fashion. There were also a series of live performances from different artists. Music was provided by DJ Sienna.
Ayana Morris exhibit will remain on display until November 15, 2024, so I highly recommend you all go and check it out. You will enjoy it and learn a lot from it.
